New heart gives girl new life
You'd never know it from her sweet and cheerful spirit, but 3-year-old Rylynn Riojas was born with a serious heart defect. When she was 2, she had already endured three open-heart surgeries and lived most of her life in the cardiac intensive care unit at Children's.
As Rylynn waited for a heart transplant, she survived with a Berlin Heart, which provided her with mechanical circulatory support until a donor match was found. Watch her journey in the video to the left to see how Rylynn is thriving with her new heart she received on Oct. 6, 2011.
